Runaway Bay is primarily a waterfront suburb, with most homes having canal access. The eastern boundary is the Broadwater, and these beaches are protected from the Ocean by South Stradbroke Island. All these factors make Runaway bay a paradise for boat lovers, with ample boating opportunities. Some parts of the suburb have no bridges allowing high-mast access to the Broadwater and Seaway. Runaway Bay also has a sailing dinghy/trailer able yacht facility operated by Southport Yacht Club. Runaway Bay Shopping Village is a popular hub for locals and has a number of specialty stores as well as Woolworths, Coles, Big W and Target also accessible by boat. Buses run regularly through Runaway Bay and The Sports Super Centre was recently upgraded for the Commonwealth Games and is a leading training facility for the public and athletes.
